Counsellors
in Primary Care
The Primary
Care Counselling Service covers GP Practices throughout Shropshire.
It is funded by Shropshire County PCT and Telford and Wrekin PCT and
provided by the Psychological Therapies Department.
The service
began in the early 1990’s and initially served two GP Practices:
Wellington Health Centre, Telford and Radbrook Green Surgery, Shrewsbury,
these surgeries were GP fundholding practices. The service began to
grow and other surgeries asked the then Community and Mental Health
Service to provide them with a counsellor. As fundholding was withdrawn
many surgeries in Shropshire lost the funding for their counsellor,
however after a few years the situation began to improve again. Gradually
more funding became available and today the service covers 42 GP Practices
throughout Shropshire: 19 in Telford and Wrekin and 23 in Shropshire
County.
The service
is provided by 20 part-time counsellors and one full-time senior counsellor.

We have recently
appointed a part-time counsellor, Saroj
Sharma, to work with diverse culture clients in the Telford and
Wrekin area. Read her leaflets in
English, Punjabi and Urdu. She will be based at Dawley Psychological
Therapies Department but will see clients at their GP surgeries or their
home. She will also be liaising with other members of the community
who work in this area and helping to develop the service further. Find
