‘THINKING
ABOUT THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIPS’
Who
is the course for?
The course
is suitable for junior doctors wishing to gain an understanding of therapeutic
relationships. It is particularly recommended for those seeking to prepare
themselves for undertaking a short supervised piece of therapeutic work.
Aims of the course
The course is not intended to provide a therapy training as such but
more the opportunity to reflect on ourselves, our patients and the
relationship that develops between us. We aim to provide a learning
experience which will enable exploration of the therapeutic potential
in our relationships with all our patients. The course will also include
an introduction to basic counselling skills.
We intend
to explore the following:
· the
historical context in which current ideas about therapy and the therapeutic
relationship can be understood
· the essential elements of therapeutic relationships
· developing an understanding of the meanings contained within
distress
· current thinking about who might benefit from these approaches.
Course Format
The course
will take place on Thursdays between 1.15pm and 4pm. Each afternoon
will be divided into two sessions, usually with a practical skills training
session followed by a discussion group. There will be a half hour break
between the two.
We anticipate
that significant learning will take place within the group as a result
of the exchange of ideas and experiences between the group members.
A reading list will also be provided to structure and consolidate the
group learning process.
Because of the nature of
the intended learning experience absences impact on the whole group
and it will be important for members to be in a position to make a
commitment to attend each session. Please indicate in advance if you
expect difficulties with this so that we can decide on the best way
forward.
